All Eggs in One Basket

The week turned out short and packed, leaving no time at all to work on the project and tackle the problems we ran into. As a reminder: for several days now our network has been down due to unexpected issues with the hosting provider.

Support is still silent, and I’m starting to genuinely worry that we’ve lost them — and they’ve lost us. The silver lining: all network data was being backed up every 15 minutes — and nothing will stop us from bringing it back up again, restoring the state it was in at the moment of failure from backup. By “everything” I mean the internal routing configuration, user data, and data about the network’s entry nodes — which are still running, but stripped of the core, they’re currently spinning in neutral.

This sends my mind drifting toward thoughts about eggs and baskets, and the fact that the words “diversification” and “fault tolerance” really ought to sit somewhere close together in my vocabulary.

The solution is obvious and trivial: find an alternative hosting provider. But right now there’s neither the time nor, honestly, the desire to deal with it. So I think I’ll chill a bit longer and knock out a couple of philosophical posts that have been queuing up.
